Farewell, My Friends by RodG

"Have to do this one last time. They're expecting."
The old lady wrapped the few remaining crumbs of her breakfast in a napkin, then padded to the porch of her small house and sprinkled her farewell gift on the wooden steps. She mumbled, "I'm leaving . . . and I'll miss you all." An old friend, a male cardinal, flew to a crumb on the bottom step and ate it quickly. Cocking his red head, he chortled a single note. "You're welcome, dear . . . as always." A cry from the car beyond. "Mother, we've got to go!" "Bye," she said, swiping at her tears.
