A children's story
Mango and Bert by jmdg1954

Mango is a playful four year-old Beagle. On sunny afternoons she would leave her backyard and take a walk to the park to play with her friends, Fester Fox, Belinda Bunny, Stinky Skunk and Rylee Raccoon. Sometimes Gertrude Goose would join them, but only after she waddled out from the pond. Then there was Hooty Owl. He would watch them play while perched on his branch.

Squirrels would scamper down from trees, and deer venture out of the woods when they saw all the other animals gather together. Neighborhood cats and dogs would run to the park when they heard the chatter of all the animals.

Once they were all together and calmed down, Belinda would start them in a game of "tag, you're it", or as they called it, "catch me if you can". Whoever was "it" had clear instructions never to tag Gertrude Goose. She just couldn't waddle fast enough to tag anyone else.

Other times, Rylee would lead them in a game of, "now you see me, now you don't", better known as hide-n-seek. In this game, no animal was allowed to hide up a tree. It wouldn't be fair to those who could not climb.

Usually Ranger Ted, better known to the animals as, Ranger Ted E. Baer, would stand around and observe.

Mango loved to play with all her friends. But her most favorite time was when Bert, a St. Bernard would come to the park.

Bert weighed almost one hundred pounds and Mango weighed twenty-one pounds soaking wet.Even with such a disparity, they were best friends.

Mango would hop on the merry-go-round and Bert, with his great big paws, would push her round and round, faster and faster, until Mango's ears and tail pointed straight back.

One afternoon Mango was tired after playing tag and hide-n-seek.She walked to the merry-go-round to wait for Bert. She waited ... and waited ... and waited, until finally, she fell asleep in the warm sunshine.

When she woke up, there still was no Bert. I wonder where he is? Mango thought. He's always on time.

After she waited a while longer, she decided it was time to go home. The sun was starting to set and soon it would be dark.

Sad that Bert never came to play, she walked slowly out of the park. Her head hung down, dissappointed. When she got to the trail, she stopped to look around. Something was not right. She was confused. The trail looked much bigger than when she entered the park. "This is not my way home," she said, "and its almost dark."

The wind started to blow and whistle through the trees. It kicked up some leaves which frightened her. Then she heard a strange sound...crrraaack! She ran behind a large tree, covered her eyes with her tiny paws and hid from what may be coming towards her.

Then she heard a deep voice. "Mango, where are you?" Smiles filled her heart.

"Bert!" she yelled. "It's you." She ran from behind the tree.

   "I'm right here, Mango! "

"I lost my way home," she said.

"Oh that's alright, I'll show you the way," Bert replied. "Hop on."

A few minutes later they arrived at Mango's home. "See you tomorrow, Bert?"

"Yes," replied Bert happily, "See you tomorrow.''

The moral to the story is... Young children should never go anywhere alone. Always bring a parent or friend.

                                        THE END.
