September in the Midwest
September morn’s becoming cool
And children have returned to school
Carrying book-laden backpacks
Having given up shorts for slacks
In midst of busy fall harvest
Farmers are getting little rest
Orange pumpkins dot the countryside
I’m longing for a hayrack ride
Flowers are beginning to droop
Too soon there will be snow to scoop
Squirrels are storing nuts and grains
Harvested corn is put on trains
Days are showing a bit less light
Earlier comes the dark of night
Soon costumed children will be seen
For next month will be Halloween
Everywhere we see piles of leaves
T-shirts exchanged for long sleeves
Tree branches are now looking bare
While for winter we do prepare
Heat of summer the cool breeze tames
Friday nights are for football games
Soon daylight savings time will change
Fall decorations rearrange
Apples picked and made into cider
Children will need a reminder
To take with them their new fall coat
Down to the ground the last leaves float
Children now have homework to do
Adults will have autumn chores too
To the south flocks of geese migrate
Teens will choose their homecoming date
Remnants of summer are put away
We’ll enjoy this September day
Thinking soon winter will be here
And bring with it holiday cheer
