The party lasted a long time
We've such stories to tell
About the long ago
And the hear and now
Of kids growing up
And saying goodbye
Some stories are funny
Some stories are sad
Sometimes we've busted guts
Over nothing
And sometimes we've spilled our souls
In pained recall
Of things gone awry
Those hurtful feelings
That came and went
And then the day came
When life changed
That devastating morning
The shame of my life
When you were there
To guide
And comfort
You were the strong one
I was weak
And you gave me respite
And I martyred
In misfortune
While you braved in loneliness
Watching life change
And love gone sad
But you stayed
Despite me
Your caring
Beyond imagination
And hurt
And I am sad
That I hurt you
In so many ways
I am healing
One step at a time
I build structure
And my roots deepen
You are my tree
And you have grown
Your fruit is the elixir
That makes me strong
It's been a long time together
