The family gathered at the kitchen table. "Can I help?" Tommy begged. "You're too small." Ellen smiled. "Fingers out of your mouth." "But --" "You heard me." "Yes, Ma 'am." "Bean soup, again." His sister frowned. "Be grateful we have it." "Mr. Howard is sending ham bones tomorrow." Tommy's brother worked at the deli. "Bless him." "I'm babysitting this weekend," his sister offered. Ellen knew her children did their best to help make ends meet. * * * * * * * * * * * * * Tommy prayed that night. "Dear God, Mommy can't pay the rent. Can the tooth fairy help?" He slipped his two front teeth under his pillow.
