Author Notes
The vernal (spring) equinox is on 20th or 21st March in the northern hemisphere and marks the day when there is twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of darkness. It is the meteorological end of Spring and the official beginning of summer.
*Summer is icumen in* is the entry phrase to a mid-thirteenth century poem (rondeau) in Wessex dialect middle English. Probably written by a monk. The poem heralds and welcomes the advent of summer.
