As the plane began filling up with smoke, the pilot announced that the passengers must leave their belongings and exit the plane immediately.  There was apparently an electrical fire in one of the cabins.  Everyone made it off the plane without incident.

However, due to the sudden change to another flight, my sister's luggage did not get transferred. After being tossed around the Pacific, her battered suitcases were finally delivered to her door a month later - filled with ants!

That's why she was rushing to the Post Office before it closed for the holiday weekend. She wanted to return the piece of lava she had packed as a souvenir.  Pele can have her cursed lava back!

While she was anxiously waiting in line with her package, a gas leak on her street exploded and completely destroyed her house.

She wondered afterwards - did the lava actually save her life?

Author Notes
As legend has it, Pele, goddess of volcanoes, curses anyone who dares to remove her lava. The Volcano National Park in Hawaii has a display case full of lava specimens returned by tourists, convinced that their pieces had jinxed them somehow.
