Faith Surrounds Me Like a Warm Blanket
Finding Faith by Ellen Frank Bayer
Faith Flash contest entry

Faith is the blooming of a rose, or what makes the birds sing after 9/11.

The world keeps spinning, the sun shines after the rain.

Faith is the world that keeps on spinning.

Waking up and watching the sky turn a deep rose as the sun rises.

Hearing my heartbeat,

noticing the crocus’ bloom, fwith their green leaves peeking out between the snow capped grass.

I believe in tiny miracles, I look for wonder in the world, how the bird knows to build a nest and how the worm knows to burrow in the earth, how my granddaughter looks at her tiny arms and learns how to use them. How the dogs find treats when humans didn’t know they were there.

How the trees bloom at each passing spring returning from the dead.

I believe because I don’t know all the answers.

Faith comforts me like a warm blanket, it surrounds me and keeps me warm in this chaotic world.

I find faith in the sun.

Watching it rise each morning, not being affected by moods or catastrophes, not looking at what man is doing to the world.

It rises and sets all over the world, Everyone is entitled to the sun

Light, warmth, power

I find faith under my feet, observing the maggots, the worms and the roots, all living beings, fighting for survival. I find faith, full faith in life

Even death doesn’t stop m my faith.

Faith is having fun each day, remembering that the child we were born with is still within us.

Remembering to smile, my mouth still goes up, looking at my newborn granddaughter and watching her face light up as I smile at her. Finding the smile within me, despite all the tragedy in the world and my private tragedies.

Author Notes
I am a lifelong New Yorker who loves all the parts of New York City, including the wildlife in the subway. I write to empty my mind of the ghosts of the past and the violence of the present.
