the last seventy years of Korean history is a history of both sides going up to the brink of war and then backing down at the last minute. But the situation remains dire as North Korea is close to imploding. South Korea is facing an essential crisis due to a declining population, the impact of climate change, and changing dynamics. this last summer was brutal as it was everywhere. the politics in the South are also quite dysfunctional on a good day. political polarization is worse than in my homeland the US. a second Korean war while unlikely remains a real possibility
