Disability is Not a Dirty Word by Harry Craft

Disability is not a dirty word

It does not define you

No matter what you’ve heard

You don’t always have to be first

It’s alright to finish third

It doesn’t matter if you are broken

And cannot be cured

Someone loves you

Even if your words are slurred

Disability is not a dirty word

Though your sight may be blurred

Emotions in your heart

Can still be stirred

disability is not a dirty word

And it doesn’t matter

What might be inferred

It doesn’t matter what people say

They will talk, that they may

Someone cares for you

And their heart is true

You can sing like a jaybird

You don’t have to feel blue

disability is not a dirty word

So, hold your head high

continue onward with the journey

Keep reaching for the sky

Stay away from the gurney

Keep the glitter in your eye

Don’t worry about the struggle

It’s alright to let out a sigh

And remember

Disability is not a dirty word

No matter what

You may have heard
