Blood red waters churn,
tiny, tearing teeth take hold,
stripping flesh from bone.

Piranha, pronounced pee-ran-ya. Feared Amazonian predator.
I was part of a tourist group fishing for piranha in an Amazonian backwater. Hooks baited with pieces of chicken. You couldn*t react quickly enough to the tug on the line. When you pulled back the hook was bare. Until my wife hooked one. She didn*t know what to do with it. Impaled on the hook, she swung it back and forwards over the heads of everyone in the small boat. Everyone ducked, shouting, hands on heads. The Tupi guide eventually grabbed it and unhooked it. We caught twelve in total. Barbequed them on a small island. Limited flavour, not much flesh. Anticlimax!
