The Internet Mouse by Jake P.
Write A Modern Fable writing prompt entry

The Internet Cafe in the Bronx in New York City was a get-away from the bustling streets for computer enthusiasts. A curious little mouse named Byte lived in the corner of the cafe, and was fascinated by the glow of screens and the hum of conversations.

One day, he overheard two humans discussing a new app that could translate animal thoughts into human language. A shiver of excitement coursed through his body. He had always dreamed of connecting with the world beyond his small corner.

Excited, Byte scurried closer to the table eager to hear the conversation. As he listened, he felt a surge of courage and decided he would try the app himself.

That evening, with a deep breath, Byte approached a young woman sitting alone with her laptop. He tugged at her shoe, and when she looked down, he squeaked, “Hello! I am Byte, and I have something to say!”

To his surprise, the app buzzed to life, translating his words into text on her screen. The woman gasped, her fingers dancing over the keyboard as she typed her responses. They shared stories, dreams, and laughter until the café closed for the night.

As news of the talking mouse spread, Byte found himself thrust into the spotlight. Crowds gathered to hear him speak, and cameras flashed from every direction. Suddenly, the thrill of attention turned to fear. He felt exposed and vulnerable, longing for the quiet comfort of his corner. The more he spoke, the more he wished to retreat, realizing that not all attention was kind and that he was simply a mouse at heart.

And the moral of the story is: Notoriety is not in a mouse’s nature; true happiness lies in the simple joys of life.
