A discussion between mother and son
One Big Boat by Karen Dougherty Estep
Dialogue Only Prompt writing prompt entry

"Hi mom, I'm home."

"Hi, son, how was high school today?"

"Great. I came up with an amazing idea."

"What would that be? Wait. Before you tell me this doesn't involve making volcanos in the house, does it?"

"Haha, mom, no. My idea is to do one project for two classes. Am the smartest son you have today?"

"Well, before I remind you that you are my ONLY son, can you tell me if it is okay for you to turn in one project in two different classes?"

"Yeah, 'cause one project is due in three weeks and the other isn't due until two weeks after that!"

" Technically, that does not answer my question, but we'll come back to that. What is your idea, my brilliant son?"

"Okay, in Geometry we have a project to build a structure with hidden angles. In science, we are learning about buoyancy and have to build a structure that floats."

" What kind of structure are you thinking of?"

" A boat built out of different sized legos. Not just a small boat, a boat as big as my desk in my room. If I make it that big I can put hidden angles in the bottom floor to make up rooms that I can put lego people and animals in."

"Wow, that is quite the project. It will take drawings and parameters so you can build this boat.  The other aspect is  that it meets the criteria. That may take a very long time. Are you possibly biting off more than you can chew? "

" Number one, I've already started drawing it out in drafting class. Mr. Lemon is helping me there. I just have to go in the attic and get the big bin of Legos. Trust me, mom, I'm really excited about this. I have a great feeling about this. I know I can make it work."

" I can see you are very excited, son, and I can tell by your enthusiasm that you will get it done."

Thanks, mom, I think the hardest part will be getting it to float for the buoyancy project. I'm gonna have to use the bathtub for that. Can I use your hand mixer to create waves like the perfect storm?"

" Hmmm..as long as you put towels on the floor!"

" You are so funny, mom."

" Well, funny or not, I have faith in your boat building skills. Where did you come up with the boat idea anyway?"

"I don't know, maybe it came to me in a dream, or maybe it's because my name is Noah!"
