The Lucky Seven
On the 18th of July we got the news the Elithe Navigator and crew were lost at sea.
They seemed to have vanished with no idea where they could be.
The whole community were somber with bad thoughts racing through their minds.
Everyone trying to stay positive but was difficult with the passing of time.
Many prayers were said for the fishermen and their families and friends.
Praying God would hear their cry and bring them home again.
They received their turbot catch and were heading home soon.
When a fire broke out in the locker room.
Captain Eugene sent out three distress calls but they didn’t go through.
The transmitters were damaged in the fire there was nothing they could do.
They tried their best to extinguish the flames but to no avail.
They had to abandon ship before it sank or they wouldn't live to share this tale.
One fisherman said he was terrified to jump because he couldn’t swim.
It was either stay on the boat and burn he said or jump right in.
All Seven fishermen jumped from the burning boat into the sea.
They managed to get onto a life raft as safe as they could be.
It was cold, foggy and wet on the small life raft.
Birds swooped and flitted around it would drive a man crazy fast.
They spent 50 hours or more drifting on that tumultuous sea.
Not knowing in the end what the outcome would be.
They had no food but some sugar cubes and water on the little raft.
The sugar cubes kept the hunger away until they were found at last.
Captain Eugene assured them everything would be fine.
“They know where we’re at he said “ it’s just a matter of time.
They were telling jokes on the raft to pass the time away.
Interviewing each other using a flashlight for a mike to make light of the day.
By Friday there was concern among the boys that they never would be found.
When the fog cleared Carter set of a smoke flare that brought a helicopter around.
Eugene lit the last hand held flare the one that determined their fate.
If they didn’t find them with that one they feared it would be too late.
“They didn’t see it Carter said and that was our last flare. “
The flare brought the coast guard to the life raft with 7 fishermen waiting there.
Carter kept his crew calm and safe.
He was a hero for sure.
He never gave up hope in spite of the hardship they endured.
The Elithe Navigator crew mastered the vast Atlantic Ocean cold.
While the onlookers witnessed a true miracle unfold.
These fishermen were very brave they used the skills they learned to survive.
They were called the lucky 7 so lucky to be alive.
Today the lucky seven are home safely with their crowd.
Elite Navigator Crew, you have done Newfoundland proud.
