A FanStory Anthology by Terry Broxson |
This is a story about the genesis of a new book, 12 New Christmas Stories. The story starts with me joining FanStory by entering a poetry contest. The poem remembered my wife. In truth, this fella is not much of a poet. But the poem won second place and received several reviews and lots of kind comments, so this FanStory thing became interesting. Many wonderful writers contribute work to FanStory regularly. An idea crawled into my old head that it might be fun to publish a book that showcases some of the FS writers' work and talent. After spending forty years working in the healthcare arena in both the nonprofit and private sectors, my understanding of the key to success in business meant to surround myself with smart, talented people. A book applying the same process with several authors could become an anthology. Friendships are easily formed on FS. This book’s idea wasn’t about friends. It became an effort to find great stories, and lo and behold, a niche revealed itself—Christmas stories. After reading dozens of Christmas stories, four writers stood out to me. When asked if they would be interested in participating, they readily agreed. We discussed which of their Christmas stories they thought were best. Twelve stories were selected, which seemed like a good number for a Christmas book. There are fiction and nonfiction stories. Lee Allen Hill, Diane Kenel-Truelove, Ann Mullen-Martin, and Jay Squires are gifted writers. It’s been very cool being associated with each one. All of the authors have been a long-time member of FanStory. They don’t know how many contests they have won; somewhere along the way, they lost count. Their work has been well-received, accumulating the highest rankings and accolades over the years. Working with a group of creative writers is sort of like herding cats. Everyone has an opinion, and often, it’s not mine. However, “No writers were harmed in the publishing process of the book.” We had an extended discussion about the title of this book. Ultimately, we decided to call it 12 New Christmas Stories, An Anthology. Simplicity in writing is a virtue. We are pleased to announce this book, born on FanStory, is now available to the world. Many of you have published books, and you know the adrenaline rush of holding the book you wrote. We share the excitement and pride all writers feel when a book comes together. Please don’t mistake our attitude for hubris. It’s only joy. Over the next few weeks, you may see some stories about each author’s experience. Additionally, we will use our limited resources to swing our swords at the windmills of dreams. We invite you to join us on the journey. It may be a little early, but Merry Christmas from all of us!
