As I understand it, though, not through celebration
Independence Day honours a new nation
free of British rule and diatribe
Good on you America, you survived
It is not quite the same as Australia Day
for here there is a power play
the original owners on history's page
take what's going and enjoy centre stage
On the fourth of July over twenty years ago
I signed a piece of paper with my heart aglow
A new life, a new home and though sometimes lonely
I too, had the chance to be free
I could still see Mummy at weekends
we were still good friends
but oh, I needed to be free
and make decisions about ME
Cooking for myself was no chore
I loved the task more and more
but keeping the house clean and neat
took the proverbial back seat
My neighbour in the nearest flat
'adopted' me and that was that
another niece, she seemed to say
true friends from that day
Memories will remain no doubt
but marriage came with a shout
now my darling stays away
if a chapter or verse is on replay
Independence is a wonderful thing
take hold of it and sing.
