An Inquiring Mind by Tom Horonzy
Instant Grits contest entry

Every now and then, an idea comes to mind to ponder that may possibly hold a modicum of truth and light.

For instance, the thought I thought today is whether my body houses a soul or did a spirit within spin a chassis over a bag of bones allowing itself opportunity to experience mortal experiences it could not do alone.

I believe all spirits within human beings lived a previous life in a pre-mortal state that held no strife, but that's not true, is it? For if the Written Word is true, all spirits there were given a choice to either join a throng to follow Lucifer, where their agency would be null and void, or accept an alternative plan to be tested whether they would Choose the Right, avoiding blight, by voluntarily being obedient to God's commands. Those who don't will reap the consequence of a poor choice, which one would think would teach them not to err by making the same mistake, expecting different results. Isn't that the definition of insanity? Still, to err is human, isn't it?

So, here We are, my spirit and body, warring each other to choose one thing or another, for everything seemingly has an opposite, such as dark and light, hot or cold, courageous or unadventurous; the list is endless. Therefore, will I complete my earthly journey successfully and return from whence I came to live in the presence of parents there, or will I fall short pining over poor choices made?

Even then, I hope the belief is real that there is a loving Redeemer who will forgive and forget my deficiencies if I repent with sorrowful intent. Otherwise, I may, indeed, be nothing more than a skin-covered sack of bones that will turn to ash which raises another poser, if true. How is it then I came to be?

Author Notes
My never-ending inquiring mind prompted me to seek an answer to the question whether life ends once we are dead, and if not what's ahead?
