Changi Chicken by Bruce Carrington True Story Flash contest entry |
King Rat, by James Covell. The first book I ever read, at the age of ten. It was about Allied POWs trying to survive in a Japanese camp in Changi, Singapore. Part of the plot described how some of the prisoners thrived by selling rat meat disguised as chicken. The novel came back to my mind thirteen years later, in February 2020. I had just picked up the food delivery left at the door to my apartment in Changi. Me? A tropical expat and a prisoner of the pandemic, staring blankly at the juicy pieces of chicken sprinkled over the fried rice.
