My Need for Competition by HarryT
Competition writing prompt entry

Bowling in a senior league, you might think of as relaxation
Yes, it is fun, but my heart beats for the taste of victory
Prior to each game, my veins throb with anticipation.
My heart and brain rev up with simmering anticipation

Makes no difference, the league is full of friends
I hold nothing back; I’m out to win every game
Practice to do better, engage in visualization
You see, I want and need the thrill of victory

My goal is to improve my game every week
I know it is only a game, as my wife says
But I don’t want to let my teammates down
So, I study and practice as often as I can

The desire to keep improving is always with me
Competition gives me the opportunity to get better
It teaches a life lesson - if I work, I will improve
It’s the opportunity to grow my own self-esteem

Now a golden ager, the fiery spirit is still within
I love the constant test of trying to do my best
And the privilege of contributing to a team effort
Need to compete, want to win, I will never quit

I will continue to strive to roll high games
Love the feeling of that relentless drive
Competition burns in my body and my soul
The thirst for victory I will feel until the end

Writing Prompt
Write a free verse poem on competition. Tell what it means to be competitive and why you love competition or not. Free verse is a form of poetry that does not necessarily follow to any specific meter patterns, rhyme, or any other pattern. Free verse, despite its freedom, often still has some elements of form. Most free verse does observe a convention of lines and structure. No rhyming patterns.
