Embarrassment by Wendy Rappeport Half a Dialogue writing prompt entry |
‘I know, but I really didn’t mean to do it. Everyone was watching, I’m sure they will all tell you what I did. I didn’t have a chance of winning, and that cemented it, didn’t it. Twelve weeks of practice down the drain. Peter Lewis was coaching me, and he’s really well-known for his prowess. He’s won the gold about six times. I’ve been working out at the gym too, and my arms have bulked up and my core is really strong. No, I knew I wouldn’t win, but just entering the contest was a win for me. I’ve always been an observer, never a participant, in track and field anyway. I haven’t entered any of the races because I can’t run fast. On Wednesday, at the try-outs, I performed pretty well in the long jump. I’ve been practising that too. Maybe I’ll enter that next time, and I’ll certainly have another go at the shotput. Yes, I started to turn, and dropped the stupid thing on my foot. I went to the First Aid room, and they think I could have broken something. I’ve got to go for an xray. I feel really ashamed, and I hope it’s not broken.’
