How Many Cs in Vacuum Cleaner? by Bill Schott

I wouldn't say that having too much time alone affects one's mind too terribly, but I have really developed a curiosity about the word vacuum cleaner.  (I am now also wondering if I should re-examine my use of "too" in the previous sentence.)

It must be a compound word -- vacuum cleaner, that is, not too, of course, because if I call for a vacuum, I get something within the description that will work. When I simply ask for a cleaner, I could get the device I really want, or a chemical, or perhaps a person.

See? I knew this was a problem for more than just me.

Also, I can never spell vacuum right the first time. Two Cs always arrive initially, are questioned within my word-spelling brain, are both written, questioned again, and then fixed. This probably happens with all words, but, as you can see, we are somehow attached to this one for deeper examination. (Though I can sense the greater quest now forming.
