what makes a human monster a monster?
bad to the bone
by jake cosmos aller A Monster writing prompt entry
There are many human monsters
Living among us.
Cult leaders, criminals, corrupt business
Government leaders, mass shooters,
Narcissists, psychopaths, sociopaths, terrorists.
What creates these monsters?
It boils down to the old
Nurture Vrs nature argument
Some argue on the nurture side,
That it is all
In how children are raised.
Children raised in a stable family
Filled with love,
Do not often become monsters.
Children raised in horrific conditions
Filled with abuse, criminal misconduct,
Emotional, political, religious, or sexual violence,
Seldom turn out fine
Most end up becoming monsters
Themselves.
Then on the nature side
Of the argument,
Some proclaim
It is all in our genes.
Saying genetics is destiny.
All part of our DNA 's cosmic coding.
Or in our astrological charts
Our future written in the stars,
Our karmic inheritance
Or Christian pre-determination
In the old Calvinist sense.
Our fate
Is written before
We are born.
I believe monsters
Become monsters
Both because of their
Astrological
Numerological charts
Their genetic history,
Their past karmic balance.
And their family dynamics
And sociological background.
And whether they are raised,
In a stable, loving family.
But in the end, some are,
As the song said,
They were born,
“Bad to the Bone.”

"Bad to the Bone" is a song by George Thorogood and the Destroyers released in 1982 on the album of the same name. While it was not widely popular during its initial release, its video made recurrent appearances on the nascent MTV, created a year before. Licensing for films, television, and commercials has since made the song more popular. Author Jim Bev glia argues that despite the song not making the pop charts, it "outstrips all other 80s songs in terms of the way it has essentially become cultural shorthand". The song adapts the hook and lyrics of Muddy Waters' Mannish Boy.
On the day I was born
The nurses all gathered 'round
And they gazed in wide wonder
At the joy they had found
The head nurse spoke up
And she said leave this one alone
She could tell right away
That I was bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone
I broke a thousand hearts
Before I met you
I'll break a thousand more, baby
Before I am through
I wanna be yours pretty baby
Yours and yours alone
I'm here to tell ya honey
That I'm bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone
I make a rich woman beg
I'll make a good woman steal
I'll make an old woman blush
And make a young girl squeal
I wanna be yours pretty baby
Yours and yours alone
I'm here to tell ya honey
That I'm bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone
Now when I walk the streets
Kings and Queens step aside
Every woman I meet
They all stay satisfied
I wanna tell ya pretty baby
Well ya see I make my own
I'm here to tell ya honey
That I'm bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
(Hoo) bad to the bone
