ONE-LINE HAIKU In Japan was written in the 13th century. Matsuo Basho, Haiku Master, and other contemporary poets wrote one-line poems. It did not take hold in English until the late 1970s, when Marlene Mountain published her first one-line haiku. It's intended to be read as one unbroken line.
