Free Rein by Tom Horonzy |
In this story I speak as the horse loosed free, and this, my friends, is one for the ages, even if I do say .
Without a bit between my lips or a harness across my shoulders, my withers shake impulsively without a bareback rider.
The paddock gate swings open. The prairie calls. With one last glance o'er my flanks, my stride assails the tall and whispering grass where my ancestors roamed before man arrived and stole it for his own. The Spirit of my father, never haltered, reigned supreme as my hoofs lifted off the ground. I felt to be flying. My muzzle quivered vigorously with every breath, and my shoulders, neck, and thighs shuddered uncontrollably, not in fear but self-indulgent ecstasy.
Racing forward, even the wind could not keep pace. I rose a crest to rest. There, I saw a waterfall descending into a pool of veiled sunlight. It was an invitation to come and bathe in luxury without the hazards of soaps or oils or a brush that pulled gnarls from my mane at the ranch. Unable to contain myself, I immediately slid down the slippery slope before splashing head over tail into twenty hands of water.
Reveling in my new found palatial comfort, all was well, before an unexpected snicker came from behind a bush. Its sound belonged to my owner's daughter, who was as surprised as I, being fully divested of humanity. In other words, she was nude, au naturel, naked as a bluebird.
Once recovered from being concerned, she swam out to where we began frolicking like a pair of magpies until a horn blared. Her mother had arrived to recover an uncovered child, not that mom knew her offspring was bare.
Together, we paddled out, shaking water from our hair, nares, and everywhere before she turned to leave with a revealing smile that said, "what we shared stays here." Donning her clothes, she beat feet from where I remained with an understandable grin. After that, I galloped to where I began, hoping the paddock door remained open and prior to the pair's arrival.
I did!
