Holding a Mole by Mike Grimes
The Joy of Childhood contest entry

While out flipping logs, if you find a mole,
Surrounded by soil the color of coal,
And grabbing a hold of the mole is your goal,
You just gotta look at the facts.

While out flipping logs, you might find a mole,
That quickly attempts to go back in his hole,
And you just can't get the mole under control!
Let's see how the mole will react.

You flipped a big log, you found a large mole!
The mole thinks you might be a beast or a troll!
He thinks that you might wanna swallow him whole!
Good thing that this mole isn't dumb.

He won't be the meat in your troll casserole!
Although he can't see you, this mole's on a roll!
He's slicker and quicker than oil in a bowl!
You seize him, then he bites your thumb!

You might try to corner a shrew or a vole.
You may try to capture a Cuban Anole
That's perched at the top of a tall, rusty pole,
But why not just take in the stroll?

So while flipping logs, you must know your role.
It's best to let critters go back in their hole.
There's no use in coaxing, no need to cajole!
There's no sense in holding a mole.

Author Notes
My boys and I discovered a mole and had quite a time attempting to catch it and pet it. We ultimately gave up. This is a photo of said mole. He is obviously agitated. No animals were harmed in the writing of this poem.
