Demonic Angels by Tom Horonzy 500 word flash fiction contest entry |
Attending church today, I saw twins stray away from their parents to stroll down an aisle wearing nearly nothing but snarky smiles. They were adorably stylish in presentation, chirping like two chipmunks would, wearing white diamond-shaped triangles on each rear-endering.
An entertaining sight, perhaps, until Mama-mia gave both a slap shading their tails the color of two fileted salmons. That caused kith and kin to spin and face their dispassionate offender. The sanctuary turned hellish as their faces grew beet red. Sparks flew from their eye sockets. The sanctum's atmosphere grew dark and dreary, reminiscence of a Longfellow tale. I forget which. I spare no words in conveying where moments ago, two virtuous angels stood, were a pair of "Rosemary Babies" glowering at an uninvited guest. All innocence was swallowed as if the gates of hell gaped open. Then, when all seemed lost, the organist played "Peace Be Still." Immediately, the anger calmed like the stormy sea beneath the Savior's feet. All fear dissipated, as the apostles did, as the once-possessed infants seemingly sprouted wings to fly into mama's loving arms bringing harmony where dissension reigned.
