Neighborly Visits by Monica Chaddick
Best Served Cold writing prompt entry

Francine was so excited! She didn't have many friends. There was a lot going on in her life, but she still longed to have a friend. Finally, it looked like she might have found one.

The woman next door, Angelique, had come over and knocked on the door. She asked Francine if she would like to hang out, and Frannie said sure. Angelique was also married. The two woman visited for several hours, talking about everything.

Francine and her husband, Chris, each had a vehicle, so Francine drove to the college campus, that was just on the other side of a small river. Angelique had to walk as her husband, Phillip, took their only car to work. Frannie invited Angie to ride with her, and Angie agreed.

Soon, the two couples were going out on double dates and hanging out. Frannie was happy that she and Chris had made some friends.

Things began to change a little at a time. Chris suddenly decided that he wanted to start working out. He said there wasn't enough room for his equipment, so was going to be working out outside. Frannie thought that was a bit unnecessary, but didn't want to start anything with her husband, so she chose to let it be.

A couple of nights after he started working out, Frannie was in the kitchen doing the dinner dishes when she heard voices outside. She looked out the kitchen window and saw that Angie was out front talking to Chris.

When Chris came in, he was very happy. She asked him what he and Angie had been talking about. Chris told her that it really wasn't her concern, but that he and Angie would be working out together from now on.

Another night, Angie was at the university newspaper office, and called Chris. She was scared, she claimed, because she thought someone was trying to get in and she was alone. He said he would be there in a few minutes, and began heading for the door. Frannie said she was going with him.

Another time, Angie decided she wanted a tattoo, but Phillip was squeamish. Frannie felt that Angie should be able to go alone, but Chris said that she wanted him to go with her. Frannie stated that if she couldn't handle it herself, or with her own husband, then she didn't need to go. Chris said that he wouldn't take her, but later disappeared. When Frannie looked out the window, he was driving away with Angie in the truck!

When they returned, Frannie told Chris to put an immediate stop to whatever was going on, or they would both be sorry.

A few evenings later, Frannie and Chris were watching television at about eleven at night when Angie walked right in! She was in a shortie nightgown. She walked straight over to the couch, and sat by Chris. She took the remote, and changed the channel!

Frannie said the entire situation was inappropriate and Angie should go home. After she left, Chris chewed Frannie out. She went and told Angie that the “friendship” was done and she was to stay away from Chris.

One day, Chris went out to work on his truck, and there was a note on the windshield. He wouldn't let Frannie see it, just said that Angie missed him. That was it! Frannie reached into the bed of the truck, grabbed a tire tool, and headed for Angie's. Chris asked what she was doing. She advised him to stay where he was.

She stormed into Angie's apartment and found her sitting on the couch. She marched up to her, stood over her with her weapon, told her what would happen to her if there was another note or word exchanged between her and Chris. She could hear Phillip's laughter as she left.
