Plain Old Me by Verna Cole Mitchell
What Makes Me Happy writing prompt entry

While some exotic birds are dressed
In colors of the rainbow,
A pink hue is a striking look
For web-footed flamingo.
The quetzal's green and scarlet coat's
A sight that causes awe,
As well as vivid blue that tints
The throat of the macaw.
The peacock's also brilliant with
A tail that's iridescent.
The parrot, too, is pretty, but
Her talking is incessant.
While these are all remarkable,
As lovely as can be,
There's none of them I like so much
As wren that sings to me.

I looked for an uncommon pet
I thought would be just right.
The first I found, a kinkajou,
Stays up all through the night.
White lion pups are cute and sweet,
but quite the costliest,
And sadly, grown-up, they can weigh
Five hundred pounds at best.
The chimp is entertaining, but
He's strong as he can be.
The squirrel monkey is too smart;
He has more brains than me.
Though these are all worth noticing,
A bit unusual,
A loving little loyal dog
Would suit me best of all.

Some people ever seek to find
a rare exotic dish,
But I can tell you simply that
It's not a thing I wish.
I tried to eat duck liver once.
It was to my dismay.
Not even if it's in a can,
Do I want deer pate.
Not birds' nest soup at any time,
Nor any kind of sushi,
Nor roasted beetles with fried ants
Would be the foods to suit me.
I'll let it be those other folks
Who give strange foods a whirl.
I'm not a daring eater, but
A meat-potato girl.

Although it might appear to some
That I am quite contrary,
I don't choose what's exceptional-
I like the ordinary.
