Seasons of the Mind

            III

As I trekked along the winding trail,
the final call of the nightingale
has caused my busy mind to still
and slowed my stride along the hill.

The air of Spring is crisp and clear.
I realize that morning’s here.
The sunlight rays project aloft
with hues of azure and bloodstone soft.

This moment I become aware
of a musty smell upon the air.
It’s nectar from dew upon wet Earth,
which shimmers too on flowering birth.

I hope there’s never a time of year
when I would fear appearing here—
a place where I feel closest to God
who looks upon the sod I’ve trod.
