Tie-Dye Moon by Jessica Wheeler
No Rules Poetry Contest contest entry

Colorful sight
This starry night
While playing in her room

Oh what surprise
To Camryn's eyes
Up high a tie-dye moon

Dances around
From what she found
A wonder in the sky

Glorious find
One of a kind
Lovely moon of tie-dye

Mommy come see
She calls to me
Assures I am to love

Out my window
Colors that glow
The tie-dye moon above!

But try I might
Nowhere in sight
Among the blues and grays

Was Camryn's claim
Saw not the same
No tie-dye in my gaze

After sunlight
Night after night
A smile from ear to ear

Sweet girl would then
Dance around when
Her tie-dye moon appeared

Soon it became
Our nightly game
We'd wait for Camryn's shout

Shreik from her room
Signaled her moon
Of tie-dye had come out

Never would I
Ask how or why
No question to her claim

Heart of this child
That Camryn smile
Tie-dye, gray, blue -the same

Months had gone by
Our moon tie-dye
Again came to her eyes

She looks at me
So lovingly
Her question a surprise

Listen, mommy
You can tell me
If you see my tie-dye moon

Tell me, you can
I'll understand
Then led me to her room

I stood there stunned
Cat had my tongue
I thought about it first

Could not let down
Or make my girl frown
But lying would be worse

So finally-
I'm so sorry
I truly wish I could

Color tie-dyes
As with your eyes
And anybody would

She didn't cry
Did not ask why
No, she just smiled at me

From her nightstand
Held in her hand
At last, the missing piece

She said she knew
My moon was blue
Without my telescope

Held to her eyes
The moons tie-dyes
From her kaleidoscope

She always knew
The moon was blue
My little girl so wise

Why grays and blues
When you could choose
To see the moon tie dye

Young or older
The beholder
Need not a lens to swoon

For beauty lies
In Camryn's eyes
Upon our tie-dye moon

Author Notes

This poem about Camryn Kelly, my six year old and the star of the story (and my life) is a true one. This all took place when she was four years old.
