The pelican may seem unusual,
and on the bank or shore as sentinel
appears to keep a lookout, stands for hours,
exhibiting great focus, fishing powers.
This bird will strut and bow to get a date.
His goal is to be faithful to his mate.
A nest, built high, will hold two eggs or more,
and parents (both!) will feed the babies for
about six weeks, until the feathers show
on junior pelicans, with time to grow.
His eyes are always wide, alert, and staid,
and how he's built to glide or dive or wade!
His wings seem jointed like director's chair,
and feathers might be mussed like old man's hair.
Although he's lumpy, angular, and lean,
he is the finest folded bird I've seen.
