Writing and Contests by Terry Broxson |
Warning: The author has noted that this contains the highest level of language. I have not seen it often, but I have seen it enough. For the purpose of this commentary, I am just gonna call it a guy thing.
I am talking about writing contests on FanStory. The contest can be either blind or not blind. For some reason, one of the entrants reviews another entry or several and gives a low rating.
Other times I have seen an entrant give a highly critical review calling into question another entry writer's integrity.
Admittedly, this type of activity does not happen a lot. But my first reaction is that maybe the culprit (for lack of a better word) thinks this will help their chance in the contest.
As someone retiring from active writing but still likes to try to create an interesting contest or two. I have three observations I will label as commentary.
First, a writer should concentrate on their own work rather than trying to belittle someone else's work in the same contest. The voters are not stupid; let them figure it out.
Second, I said I would call this commentary a guy thing. When some guys start contemplating their navel, they end up playing with something else.
Third, you don't need to turn into one. I am not talking about navels.
