Charlie's Different by Thesis Charlie writing prompt entry |
The last time I saw Charlie was the summer before we all went away to college. I remember him being a great baseball player. He was thin and an extremely fast runner who played center field. I always envied that he was a good athlete, as I was a total geek and avoided gym class as much as possible.
I ran into his sister, Sandra, at a business function recently and we began to reminisce. I always had a crush on her. She was one of the elite girls at the school, smart, and totally hot, although she didn't flaunt it. She was wanted by every male student in the school but was totally uninterested in any of us. Looking back, I can't blame her we were all idiots in High School. The function was boring, but the drinks were free, so we decided to find a quiet corner table to talk. I loved the sound of her voice and the confidence she projected. She was a beautiful woman and I found myself trying to take in everything about her that I could. Her hair and makeup were perfect. Her dress and heels, expensive and elegant. She wore just a hint of perfume, but she didn't need it. I was enjoying our conversation immensely. She glanced at her watch and realized it was approaching 11:30 p.m. Without realizing it, we had been talking over drinks for several hours. She said that she should go, explaining that she was staying with Charlie tonight and had an early flight back to Miami in the morning. I asked how she was getting to Charlie's and offered to drop her off if she hadn't driven to the restaurant. She declined and said she had taken an Uber. Feeling protective, I asked her to accept my ride since it was late, and I had a car service waiting outside. She finally agreed and we left the function. Charlie's apartment was about twenty minutes away, and we continued our conversation along the way. Upon arrival, I asked her if she would be willing to let me call her when I came to Miami next month. She agreed and gave me her business card, which I slipped into my jacket pocket. When we arrived, I walked her to the lobby of her brother's building. I asked her if I could say hello to Charlie since I hadn't seen him in such a long time. She stared at me and asked, "When was the last time you saw Charlie?" "Just before we went away to college." "Then you don't know." "Know what?" "That Charlie isn't the same person you remember. He's gone through some changes." "We all have." "No, I mean, well, Charlie is now a woman." "She's changed her last name so no one would know. Do you still want to meet her?" "Yes, I do." We took the elevator to the eighth floor and walked down the hall to apartment 8C. Sandra put the key in the door. When she opened it, I recognized Charlie as the new receptionist where I worked.
