A nurse wheeled her over to the huge bay window so she could see her family on the green lawn of The Residence. They sang and waved a sign that said, “Happy One Hundredth, GG!” She could not hear them, and barely saw the sign. She clutched her rosary. This woman who’d survived a century was imprisoned by a broken-down body and Covid. Outside the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren saw a hand clutching the window sill, a rictus they mistook for a smile. They did not see the tears dribbling down her hollow cheeks.
