So you want to embrace the truth bag
And ease on into the truth bag
But you ain't just exactly sure what's true
Too many lies and fake things everywhere
So you start to let your mind grow
Spend big bucks to find the latest thing
But somehow you know there's much more to the trip
(What is the truth) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is the truth) if you're really know the truth, the passing years will show
You in a the truth trip, maybe more than the truth
But what is the truth?
You became part of the new breed
Been smoking only the best weed
Hanging out on the so-called the truthiest set
Been seen in all the right places
Seen with just the right faces
You should be satisfied, but still it ain't quite right
(What is the truth) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is the truth) if you're really the truth, the passing years will show
You in a the truth trip, maybe truer han the truth
But what is the truth?
The truth is (well) what it is
The truth is (yeah) what it is
The truth is (uh huh) what it is
And sometimes the truth is what it ain't
Hey, hey
You done went and found you a guru
In an effort to find you a new you
And maybe even managed to raise your conscious level
While you're striving to find the right road
There's one thing you should know
What's the truth today might become another lie
Another fake thing ¢?" a real deep fake, y'al.
(What is the truth) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is the truth) if you're really the truth, the passing years will show
You in a the truth trip, maybe truer than the truth
But what is the truth
Think about it, y'all
(What is the truth) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is the truth) if you're really the truth, the passing years will show
(What is the truth) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is the truth) if you're really the truth, the passing years will show
(What is the truth) ah
(What is the truth) ha, I'd like to know
(What is the truth) is it in the style of your hair
(What is the truth) is it in the clothes that you wear
(What is the truth) ha, I'd like to know
(What is the truth) I'd like to know
(What is the truth) what is the truth, y'all, hey
(What is the truth) hey, ho, oh
(What is the truth) what is the truth, y'all
(What is the truth) I wanna know
(What is the truth) I
(What is the truth) hey, I wanna know what the truth it is

Writing Prompt
Poems are Part I of every song with lyrics. Choose a song you love, and re-write the words. Can be a Broadway tune, a pop or country song, even a Christmas carol -any song at all! But whatever it is, you'll help yourself in the polls if you also post a recorded version of the original song when you post the new-and-improved lyrics/contest entry by you. (Because the voters might not be familiar with the tune, so giving them a chance to listen to it will help them "hear" yours!)

What is Hip 1973 Lyrics
So you want to jump out your trick bag
And ease on into a hip bag
But you ain't just exactly sure what's hip
So you start to let your hair grow
Spend big bucks to top your wardrobe
But somehow you know there's much more to the trip
(What is hip) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is hip) if you're really hip, the passing years will show
You in a hip trip, maybe hipper than hip
But what is hip
You became part of the new breed
Been smoking only the best weed
Hanging out on the so-called hippest set
Been seen in all the right places
Seen with just the right faces
You should be satisfied, but still it ain't quite right
(What is hip) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is hip) if you're really hip, the passing years will show
You in a hip trip, maybe hipper than hip
But what is hip
Hipness is (well) what it is
Hipness is (yeah) what it is
Hipness is (uh huh) what it is
And sometimes hipness is what it ain't
Hey, hey
(What is hip) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is hip) if you're really hip, the passing years will show
You in a hip trip, maybe hipper than hip
But what is hip
Think about it, y'all
(What is hip) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is hip) if you're really hip, the passing years will show
(What is hip) tell me, tell me if you think you know
(What is hip) if you're really hip, the passing years will show
(What is hip) ah
(What is hip) ha, I'd like to know
(What is hip) is it in the style of your hair
(What is hip) is it in the clothes that you wear
(What is hip) ha, I'd like to know

Note: the Tower of Power is the best funk/soul band of all times in my opinion. They have been playing for almost 50 years with at least one of the original band members still playing. They have the best horn section of all time, great drummers, and great soul singers. And mean guitarists and killer keyboard players. What is Hip dates from 1973 and is perhaps their best song and a great intro to the band. Bump City, Soul Vacination, and Down to the Night Club are great party songs, and You are Still a Young Man is the best make out song of all time and the first slow dance song I ever danced to. I often thought that so many people were conceived after digging this song with their partner at the time. The band was multi-cultural from the start reflecting the diversity of the East Bay Area (Alameda, Berkeley, Oakland, Richmond and points in between and near by). The band members proudly proclaimed they were East Bay Grease reflecting their blue color background.
