"Long long time ago, I can still remember

how that music used to make me smile"

'Twas a time of innocence, "American as Apple Pie"

Jesus, God and faith were strong, we're "the Apple of His Eye"

"Did you write the Book of Love, and do you have faith

in God above,  if the Bible tells you so"

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens,  Bopper Rock and Roll

Were killed in an airplane crash, right after their show

"Something touched me deep inside, the day the music died"

Elvis, King of Rock, since days of dancing with Dick Clark

Beatles, Dylan and Jagger; the jesters made their mark

"And while the King was looking down,

the jesters stole his thorny crown"

Superintendent came to school and let us out that day

He said our President was taken tragically away

"I can't remember if I cried,

when I read about his widowed bride"

At five years old, still innocent, in the start of the sixties

Flower children, Vietnam and protests of the hippies

"In the streets, the children screamed,

lovers cried and the poet's dreamed"

Martin Luther King,  killed with another bang

God was pronounced dead, by satan's newest evil gang

"To light the sacrificial light, I saw satan laughing with delight"

Russia's finger on the button;  threatens Nuclear War

We were watching them, that's what our first rockets were for

"We were all in one place, a generation lost in space"

Beatle's song, 'Helter Skelter' portrayed killing as a passion

The Sharon Tate murders by Helter Skelter's, Charles Manson

"Helter Skelter in a Summer Swelter.
Birds flew off with a fallout shelter"

Was a fan of Janice Joplin, towards the end of the decade

Age of Innocence was gone, by satan's music trade

"I met a girl who sang the blues,

I asked her for some happy news"

"She just smiled and turned away"

Elvis, Holly, Vallens, Bopper: now part of our past

Some music from the sixties, we're  thankful didn't last

"I went down to the Sacred Store, where I'd

heard the music years before. But the man there,

said the music wouldn't play"

  ~Epilogue~

"And three men I admire most; the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

They took the last train for the coast, the day the music died"

"So bye bye Miss American Pie. Drove my Chevy to the levee,

but the levee, was dry, And good ole boys were drinking

whiskey and rye, singing this will be the day that I die"

The lines below each stanza are lyrics from the song that are related to that verse. They are in bold and italics. I used more lyrics for the ending of 'American Pie' as special relevancy for the poem.

Also having a hard time getting my iPad to use less space between lines. I apologize for this. Thank you for your understanding.
