Crab Claws by LisaMay

On evenings as the day winds down
I like to leave the busy town,
drive to the beach, and walk on sand
beside the rocky coast headland.

Slow-stepping while the tide withdraws,
I was surprised to find these claws.
Where is the rest of that poor crab?
Perhaps a gull has made a grab
and ripped it open for a feast.
Now that crustacean is deceased.

But then I noticed a new clue:
the claws came from not one, but two.
I worry for those amputees,
their lives so full of tragedies.

Have they been fighting – lost a limb?
Will their survival now be grim?
How will they catch their dinner now?
They'll need to find a way somehow.
I know that I will be displeased
if my bare foot is boldly seized!

Author Notes
Author's Note:
I took this photo at Keyhole Rock, Aramoana Beach, Dunedin, New Zealand. It is a half-hour drive from my home. I was hoping to see some penguins come ashore in the evening, but none arrived, so I made do with these crab claws for poetic inspiration.
