One dark night, down by the sea...
The Lighthouse by Peter Mac
Rhyming Contest writing prompt entry

Once upon a time, down by the sea,
With one flashing eye and a screaming banshee,
Grew a single great statue, out of a rock,
Who brings home the ships safely to dock.

It wailed out its noise, it quickened its wink,
Must be kept safe, not founder and sink,
A ship over yonder, with sailors astute,
As they run for the port, a storm in pursuit.

The light comes much faster, the noise now so loud,
Too close to the shore, the rocks in a shroud,
Hear the waves roaring, above the storm's schemes,
"Move out to sea", the Captain he screams.

Safe for the moment, the light flashes calm,
And says, "Follow me, you'll come to no harm".
"The port is quite close, just follow my sound",
"Safe into harbour, and not run aground".

The crew are all grateful, the light saved their souls,
And prevented the ship being chopped full of holes.
They visit the keeper, to pay their respect,
But the lighthouse stands empty, decayed with neglect.
