SCENE TWO
Time Period: Late 1950’s
Characters:
Betsy: 17-year-old high school senior.
Matt: Young man in early twenties. Betsy’s first date.
Setting: Matt’s 1957 black Pontiac sedan.
Fade in:
Matt holds the car door open on the passenger side, and Betsy slides in. He goes around and gets in and starts the car.
Betsy: I like your car. It is much nicer than that old gray thing I saw you driving last summer.
Matt: I borrowed my brother’s car. I was trying to impress you, too. I still have that old gray thing, as you so elegantly put it.
Betsy: Oops… Sorry, I didn’t mean to insult your car.
Matt: Where is this movie you are so anxious to see? I was expecting to just sit awhile and get acquainted. We really haven’t talked before. When I first saw you at your uncle’s cafe last summer, we hardly got a chance to say two words.
Betsy: There’s no movie. I just wanted to get you out of the house before my daddy came back. He’s on the rampage. Can we just drive somewhere?
Matt: Are you always this devious?
Betsy: Only when the situation calls for it. I was protecting you.
Matt: What’s up with your daddy? Should I be worried? Does he have guns?
Betsy: Duh… This is the south. Of course, he has guns. Doesn’t everybody? But he hasn’t ever shot anyone, yet. He just doesn’t want me dating.
Matt: Is it me, or does he have a problem with all your dates?
Betsy: What dates? This is first time I’ve been on a date. He doesn’t like any guy who wants to go out with me.
Matt: Well, now you’ve got me worried. Do you have any sisters that date?
Betsy: Nope! I don’t have any sisters or brothers. I’m an only child.
Matt: You are? Are you petted?
Betsy: Petted? What do you think I am? A cat or something?
Matt: Well, only children are usually spoiled. Do you smoke… or drink?
Betsy: No, I’m not spoiled, and no, I don’t smoke or drink. What is this? The inquisition?
Matt: I’m just trying to get to know you. I’m glad, you don’t smoke or drink. I don’t either, and I don't date girls who do. How about if we stop somewhere and get a cup of coffee?
Betsy: I don’t drink coffee, either, and I don't date boys who do. ... Just kidding!.... I guess I could get a coke or hot chocolate.
Brief fade out and slowly fade back In.
>>>>>>
Time: 2 hours later…
Matt is driving Betsy back home.
Betsy: Wow! We sat in the restaurant for two hours. I guess we kind of broke the ice. I feel like I know you better.
Matt: Would you like to go out again? Maybe we could go to a drive-in movie, next Saturday night. I’ll be out of town until then. I’ll be staying in Jackson and looking for a job.
Betsy: Sure, I’ll go. Pick me up around seven.
Matt: What about your daddy? Will he let you go?
Betsy: He works late on Saturday. Besides, if he sees you haven’t harmed me in any way, hopefully he'll be appeased. I think he’s mostly bluster and not really that dangerous. But just in case… Let me out at the driveway. I’ll walk the rest of the way.
FADE OUT….
