Howlin' by pome lover
Children's Poetry Contest contest entry

John wanted fried eggs and bacon on toast,
Big sister was leaving to go to the coast;
She grabbed brother’s bacon and ran out the door,
John started yellin’ and cryin’ for more.

Their parrot got loose ’cause his cage door was open,
Flew over John’s eggs and left him a token;
John made a face;  “I can’t eat my eggs now,”
But Elmo, the beagle, said, “Well, I can, wow!”

Mom grabbed a dishtowel and popped it at Elmo
Who yelped and he pouted and he acted as though
He’d been beat with a whip, ‘stead of popped with a towel,
And he sat in the corner and started to howl.

And the neighborhood dogs joined with other dogs who
 Added their howls to the hullabaloo;
And frustrated Mom didn’t know what to do,
So, she opened her mouth… and she howled, too!

Author Notes
this poem is for the age child who would get the meaning of the parrot's "token," and say "EWWW," and (hopefully) laugh at the chaos, and the thought of Mom, howlin'.
