She trembled inside the mason jar--round eyes darting left and right before staring into mine with palpable fear. I marveled at the golden, glowing creature I'd mistaken for a firefly.

"I won't hurt you," I said in vain. She didn't understand. Perhaps, she didn't believe me.

My head swam. I held evidence magic existed. If I revealed it, what would befall her? Her family? Her world?

I unscrewed the lid, and she bolted toward the forest. Then, she bowed before disappearing into the thicket with a piece of my heart. If I returned tomorrow, would I see her again?
