The Witness by DragonSkulls
~ Family ~ fiction story writing prompt entry

It was a Saturday afternoon. The family was sitting around watching
Netflix when the doorbell rang. My son answered it. Just as soon as
I heard, "Can we have a moment of your time?" I instantly knew it
was Jehovah's Witnesses.

I jumped up and ran to the door and yanked my son backward. I
looked through the crack of the door and said, "No thanks. We're
happy with the religion we have."

"Can we at least leave you a pamphlet?"

I wailed, "No," and slammed the door. They stood on our porch for five
minutes. Finally, looking out the peephole at the two, I hollered,
"Please go away!"

"We just want to give you this pamphlet, sir."

In a louder voice, I yelled, "!"

I returned to the movie. Twenty minutes later my wife went to the
restroom. She shrieked, "They're at the bathroom window!"

Just as I got there, I heard one of them asking, "Ma'am, can we
have a minute of your time?" while holding up a pamphlet.

We had to escape. We grabbed our son and ran to the garage and
jumped into the car. The second the garage door cleared the roof,
I tore out of the driveway.

Twenty miles away, we stopped at Applebee's to collect ourselves
and ordered some food. Just as it was coming to the table, from
the booth behind us, we heard, "Can we please give you a pamphlet?"

The waitress flung our food all over the floor and other customers
as we knocked her out of the way to escape.

We jumped in the car and sped off again. I veered onto I-75 and got
up to a hundred miles an hour. A couple minutes later, another car
pulled up beside us. I watched in shock as the passenger rolled down
his window and yelled, "Can we just leave you a pamphlet?"

I savagely aimed for the Clarksville exit. They ran a semi off the road
to keep up with us. In the rearview mirror, I watched in horror as the
truck jack knifed, flipped and burst into flames.

I simply couldn't lose them.

Running out of options, I made a phone call, then drove like a madman
to our church. Before the car even came to a stop, we all dove out. The
Jehovah Witnesses' car skidded to a halt in the driveway. Our preacher
opened the door. "Hurry! Hurry! Get in here!"

We ran for our lives. Once inside, we were rushed to the church
basement door. "You'll be safe down here," Pastor Edwards assured.

We got to the bottom of the stairs and that's where we saw numerous
other families huddled down in the corners, wide-eyed in fear. We
spent the night in silent darkness.

The next morning, our preacher peered out the stained-glass window.
"They're still here! God save us!"

I couldn't take it anymore. I feared for my family's safety. Everyone
watched as I inched to the door and barely cracked it open.

"Can we have a moment of your time?"

"Just give it to me!" I yelled. They slid the little pamphlet through the
door crack. I took it.

Collapsing against the door, my voice shaking, I said to everyone,
"It's all over now. We're safe. It's over."
