Sick to death ... by Wendy G Supernatural Fiction - Not Horror writing prompt entry |
Could any week have been worse? Rachel and Debbie wept in each other's arms. A week ago, their brother Tom had been alive, well, and joking around, as normal. His illness had come on so suddenly! The girls did their best to reduce his fever, cooled his burning brow with cold cloths, helped him to sip fluids – nothing was working. No improvement at all. Even worse, as time passed, the horrid realisation dawned. He was dying. They sent urgent messages to his friends as his condition rapidly deteriorated. Many came to see him, wish him a speedy recovery … and then, as reality hit, to say their good-byes. One friend didn't respond at all. No word, no visit. They were quite hurt at his lack of care. They had shared meals any number of times, and they had all got along well. What had changed? Had they offended him in some way? A few days later, Tom passed away. Grief-stricken, Rachel and Debbie worked their way through the burial and funeral arrangements. Pale with grief and sleepless nights, they reflected – it had been a "good" funeral, worthy of Tom. Plenty of friends had been present, fine words had been said, comfort offered. Yes, he would be greatly missed. A few days later, who should turn up? Tom's good friend, or was it his ex best friend? "Why didn't you come earlier?" the girls accused. Their distress was evident. "Where is he buried? Take me to him!" They looked at each other. Too late now to say good-bye, they reflected bitterly. Dead four days, and only now he bothers to come! Nevertheless they took him to the graveyard. He looked at the plot, and wept. So he did care! "Tom, come back!" their friend addressed the grave-site. The girls looked at each other. Had he gone crazy? The earth started to shake. Violently. The sisters jumped back, cold with fear. Goosebumps. Rachel screamed. Debbie looked as though she was about to faint. Tom was there, standing beside his grave site, very alive!. Their friend smiled.
