Baker Street by Tirzah Greene Ghost Story writing prompt entry |
She appeared in the corner of the room and immediately noticed two young girls playing a game at a table. She watched, as the two girls, giggled and laughed.
"I'm not moving it! I promise." "I'm not either ... you have to be!" "No." "It moves so fast, you MUST be moving it." "I'm not." The woman watched and moved closer to the table. These two are laughing so much. I can't hear the questions. OH, STOP LAUGHING! She pulled out an empty chair from the table, sat down, and folded her hands on the table. "Did you see that?" "Uh... I think so." The girls stared at each other wide-eyed. The girls both stared in the direction of the woman now sitting at their table. "I want to go home now." "No. It's working! Let's keep asking questions." "I'm scared. I don't think this is a good idea." "Come on! I need your help. It's just a game, you said so yourself." "My mom said it's just a game. I'm not sure now." "Come on! ... Just ask a question." The woman stared at the table, thinking to herself, why have they stopped playing? I want to see how this silly game is played. "Ahh. Okay. What's your name?" "My name is Rose." The girls looked at each other in amazement. "How old are you?" The woman sighed. "Forty-five." "Are you married?" "Yes, once." "Do you have a profession?" "I'm an elementary school teacher." The girls stop playing and sit in silence for a minute. "Sally, this is working. I can't believe it." "Are you sure you're not pushing it?" "No, I don't think so." The woman placed her hand under her chin. Come on girls. I'm waiting here she thought to herself. The girls place their hands on the planchette again. "Where do you live?" Oh, finally a good question. "I live on Baker Street." "That's YOU! Elizabeth you're pushing it!" "No, I'm not. I promise." "Excuse me? You do too! ... You live on Baker Street." The woman watched as the two girls argued. "Just play, ask another question." "When did you ... ah... die?" Die? That's a strange question. What kind of game is this anyway? The woman thought to herself. "No answer." Sally looked up at Elizabeth who shrugged her shoulders. "Ummm... what year is it?" "Oh, 1953." "1953? That was a long time ago," Sally calmly said. A long time ago? These girls are a bit confused. She looked at her watch, this was fun but ... I need to go. The woman pushed the chair back, stood up, while pushing the chair even with the table, she said, "Thank you for allowing me to watch your game. Have a good day." The woman walked away and left the room. The girls froze staring at the empty chair. "Sally, I ... uh ... think Rose left." "Me too, the board is saying ... Have a good day."
