Harbinger of Winter by Reese Turner
Rhyme It writing prompt entry

A chilling wind blew across my face today,
Not cold like I have known before, yet,
A gentle warning of what is soon to come,
Winter! Things to do. Supplies to get!

Check the propane tank; Filled? No leaks?
Are the distant, unused pipes all drained?
How ‘bout that corner in the barn for cats?
Have I cleared the junk of what remained?

Have I checked the fence for damage?
Will it stand through the winter’s blow?
Is there food stockpiled, and whiskey…
It gets tough in winter, don’t you know?

I once remembered all those things to do
Before full winter came to our door.
Now, I have to write each step down so
I’ll remember, but still there’s always more.

And, these days, there are no kids around
To insure they are dressed, well and warm.
There is only the winter’s lonely solitude
As neighbors retreat from winter’s storm.

But, as luck would have it, I’m still married
And she can think of things which I must do
Even as the ice builds each wintry blast,
I’m spared the lonely quiet of winter, too…

Writing Prompt
Write a poem of any type on any topic. But there must be a rhyme scheme.

Author Notes
In the interest of brevity, I did not report my freezing a few lbs of chuck for coming batches of chili and beef stew. Got that done yesterday. And, I never publicly admit that I stash box cab and merlot, but who reads these author notes anyway. A few bags of chips, jars of salsa and some ice cream (to celebrate the warm days).
