Two-penny mystery
Two weeks and two days ago, I posted a lite bite about a consultation with a lawyer, Maureen Lane, who'd wrapped up the session with a stunning revelation: she'd been bilked of a million bucks by her paralegal.
My mini-tale concluded on a light note. Maureen was writing a screenplay about the saga in the hopes of recouping her losses; I facetiously solicited titles for her script.
Today's post is dead serious. Dead, I fear, in the literal sense; Maureen hasn't sent the promised follow-up materials, nor have I been able to reach her, despite three attempts to do so.
Lest you think I'm being melodramatic, I shall reveal here what I declined to include in my first post.
The woman who stole from Maureen was arrested; whilst out on bail she sneaked into Maureen's yard and tossed poisoned treats to the dogs; both died.
A person who is capable of such a monstrous act would surely have no compunction wreaking deadly revenge on her human target.
I called the attorney who referred me to Maureen; she'd retired, as had her partner (my former divorce lawyer). I explained my concern to the collective's receptionist, who promised to follow up.
That was five days ago; I haven't heard back.
I just googled Obituary: Maureen Lane.
Lots of hits; common name: my Maureen was not among them.
My concern is not assuaged; I fear her body has been deep-sixed in a dumpster.
