“Today’s the first day of the rest of your life”,
An old saying often proclaimed by my wife.
It’s her way of presenting to me some new list
Of things I must do, or things I have missed.
On the other hand, it is my point of view
That I don’t really want any new things to do.
Yesterday was fine, as was day before
I don’t want a “First Day” at all any more!
Since the kids all left and since I retired,
I enjoy life without being busily mired.
Trips to the golf course three times a week
Are about all the contact with others I seek.
Please, no new flowers to plant or prune over,
Who cares if the lawn has some weeds or clover?
We built a new room, with just two of us now?
That kind of First Day seems silly somehow!
My clothing and shoes are O.K., nails are fine.
Would prefer not joining a gym, dear wife of mine.
At my age, the “rest of my life” is not far away,
So, let’s enjoy what we have, sans labor, today!

Author Notes
Is it just me, or do women become more demanding with age? Or, maybe since I am not working at a paying job, she feels she must fill up my hours with non-profit performance. I have not lost my love of life, but I am more focused on living than accomplishments. Have you ever met anyone who is retired and brags, "I'm busier now than when I was working"? Did you shout, "You're an idiot"?
