I spent ten years where outhouses were the norm
The Outhouse by T B Botts
True Story Flash contest entry

For ten years I lived on an end-time farm in Southeast Alaska. There were no indoor toilets, only outhouses. We didn't have toilet paper, only newspapers cut into four inch squares. Sometimes a pattern, like for making a dress or shirt would show up. It was much softer, but not as absorbent. Plus there was no sports section or daily news. Newspaper had the disadvantage of leaving ink on your hands, but you always knew who washed afterwards. If Charmin would merge with the Wall Street Journal, we could have the best of both worlds.
