St. Patrick wasn't Irish! Just imagine such a thing!
There's not a Gaelic drop in him whose praises we all sing.
'Tis true. He was Eyetalian. Sure a Roman through and through,
Who did not know potatoes from the whiskey in his stew.
He et at Joseph tables, where they've oranges and such.
But oh, he loved the Irish, and he had the Irish touch.
He crossed the sea to save us, to teach God's holy word,
For way back then, the Irish had the Gospel never heard.
And they did the Kerry dancin,' which sounds lovely-like and sweet,
But me mither talked about it in such words ye can't repeat.
And there was the horseback ridin' in every kind of weather,
Not wearin' jockey silks, ye know, but in the altogether.
And folks believed in fairies and in trees and even stones.
The Celtic world was real to them; they felt it in their bones.
But Patrick plucks a shamrock, and he tells a different tale.
And tells and tells his story up the hill and down the vale.
At first, nobody listened, but in time, Eyetalian charm
Won all the people over, for the dear man did no harm.
And now we sing his praises, not for shamrocks, but because
St. Patrick wasn't Irish, but we know he wished he was.

Author Notes
St. Patrick's and Ireland's true story is told in "How the Irish Saved Civilization" by Thomas Cahill. Sure, give it a read.
