Please choose metaphors that best suit your mood. There may be many--moods and metaphors. For instance, hissing is hyphenated to accentuate and draw out the ess sound, but the hyphen may or may not also turn the gerund into two distinct words for you to play with, that is, if you choose to go in that direction.
